Frequently Asked Questions

How true is it that if I have ants around my house, I probably have termites, too.
There is no real connection between the presence of ants and termites. While both of these pests generally prefer the same habitats such as woodpiles and mulch beds, the fact is they are natural enemies and they’re not likely to be found together.

Is there any particular age of a house that makes it more susceptible to termites?
If a termite problem is going to develop, it usually happens when a home is between 8 and 15 years old. That’s the norm. Obviously, conditions and circumstances vary. In fact, you may never experience any termite problems at all. However, if you observe other homes in your neighborhood being treated for termites, this is a sign that they are present and it would be a good idea to have your home checked. Also, please refer to the Termite Services section of this site for advice on what to look for regarding termites.

There are so many pest controls products on the market. Which are best to use?
Active Pest Control technicians will be happy to share their knowledge and recommend prevention and/or treatment plans that are right for your lifestyle and your home.

I recently saw a mouse in the garage. Does this mean we have a problem?
Not necessarily. It might have been an isolated incident. The best way to determine that is to have a professional inspection for signs of activity. You can also purchase glue traps and check for mouse activity on your own.

Each year, the presence of ladybugs increases around our house, particularly during the fall and spring. How can we prevent this?
You should seal as many cracks and crevices around windows and doors as well as underneath siding in the fall. This helps prevent ladybugs from trying to get inside to stay warm during the winter. A residual treatment is also an effective way to kill them before they can get inside the walls.

One of our pets recently found a dead mouse in the backyard. Can it get secondary poisoning from the mouse possibly having eaten poison from a bait station?
No. Pest control companies, including Active Pest Control, use materials that do not build up to dangerous levels inside rodents. In particular, one feeding to a mouse will kill it, yet it’s not a high enough content to harm larger domestic animals.
