Termites – What to Look For

Termites exist in colonies where their total numbers frequently exceed more than 1 million in population! A typical termite colony is a working community comprised of winged reproductive insects that, when ready, vacate their home in swarms with the sole purpose of creating new colonies. The actual swarming generally takes no longer than one hour to complete, so it is a sight rarely observed. However, once it’s completed, the termites are ready to eat – and eat they do. A common misconception if we do see the termites swarming is that they are flying ants, but that is not the case.

How Do You Know If There Is a Termite Problem?

Look for any of the following pieces of evidence:

  • Piles of small, delicate wings shed by reproductive termites
  • Visible Mud Tubes on wood and other surfaces. Termites use these for above ground travel.
  • Damaged or hollow-sounding walls
  • Pinholes in drywall or wallpaper
  • Dead or live termites

If you see any or all of these signs, call Active Pest Control immediately because it’s a good bet you’ve got working termites in your home or place of business. Know this: Their appetites are voracious and they eat 24/7!

What Conditions Attract Termites?

  • Shower pan leaks (their favorite)
  • Plumbing leaks
  • Cracks in foundations
  • Soil that is graded above the foundation
  • Firewood stacks
  • Wooden fences that are attached to the house
  • Mulch planters attached to homes
  • Overgrown shrubbery
